Harvest is being celebrated in three different ways by St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church, Malton.

The church’s CAFOD Action group held a harvest table after services on the last weekend of September in aid of the international aid agency.

A CAFOD Harvest Fast Day was arranged for October 7/8 while a harvest Festival Mass was being organised at St Mary’s RC Primary School for October 20.

The school is also seeking old shirts to be donated for the children to wear while they are painting.

The school, which has 99 pupils, received an “outstanding” report following an Ofsted inspection.

Recent collections at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church, Malton, raised £1,471.39 for the Xaverian Missionaries and £1,173.14 to help victims of the famine in East Africa through CAFOD, the international aid agency. Both collections will be increased through Gift Aid.

Masses at St Leonard & St Mary’s take place at the weekend at 6.30 pm on Saturdays and 9.30 pm on Sundays and various other services are held throughout the week. PARISHIONERS at St Leonard & St Mary’s

RC Church, Malton, enjoyed a full English breakfast after Sunday mass to celebrate Mother’s Day. The church’s CAFOD Action Group is planning a plant and jam pot sale on the weekend of June 4/5 after services to raise funds for the international agency and its work in El Salvador. The Easter weekend saw three baptisms, two confirmations and two people being received into the Catholic Church.

St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church was one of several that took place under the umbrella of Churches Together in Southern Ryedale to mark Good Friday.

Instead of representatives from all the churches walking together from one place to another behind a large wooden cross the individual churches walked with banners to Market Place, Malton, where they were greeted by the single beat of a drum.

Several hundred people attended the Good Friday Gathering in Market Place, Malton, whereas in past years the Walk of Witness usually attracted just a few dozen. The Rev Andy Boxall of Elim Ryedale and Hope Central, who led the service, said: “We are very pleased with the turnout and that all the churches were represented.”

This year representatives from each church walked with banners to the Market Place, which they entered to the accompaniment of a single, drum beat for what was described as a service “putting the ‘good’ into Good Friday.”

Music was provided by representatives from the Elim Ryedale Band, the Malton White Star Band, the Swinton and District

Excelsior Band and the Salvation Army Band and the Spectrum Youth Choir at St Michael’s Church, sang to the crowd. As well as singing hymns, people dressed up in costumes of the day to play out the drama of the crucifixion narrated by Judy Brown

Readings and prayers were provided by the Rev Geoff Floyd ( Malton Methodist), Pastor Adrian Green ( Malton Baptist), Major Alwyn Hockley (Salvation Army) and Father Tim Bywater (St Leonard & St Mary RC).

A prize of £100, donated by the Fitzwilliam Estate, was awarded to St Benedict’s RC School which was one of several primary

schools to enter a competition depicting Easter scenes. The entries were judged by Malton mayor Cllr Jason Fitzgerald Smith, Matt Brush of Zoo Vet at Large and Jean Garner from the estate.

The event ended with family games and entertainment plus refreshments – another new element of the gathering which went on well into the day.

Several parishioners from the Church were among nearly 700 from the Diocese of Middlesbrough who attended either of the Masses

celebrated by Pope Benedict XV1 in Edinburgh and Birmingham during his four-day visit to the UK.

A parish gift weekend at the church raised, with gift aid, around £4,000 which means a new linternal system can be installed and

work carried out to repair some of the stonework inside the famous clock tower that can be seen for miles around.

The gift weekend replaced the traditional Christmas Fair in the Milton Rooms, Malton, some years ago following a survey among

parishioners and the fact that fewer people wanted to become involved in organising it.
