This will be my last month with you in the Wolds Valley. After nine years in the Sherburn Circuit, and 32

years as a Minister in the Methodist Church I am retiring with my wife back to Nottinghamshire, a little

nearer our family. My place will be taken from September 1st by Rev. Elizabeth Clark, who is moving,

with her family from Thirsk. Elizabeth is the Rural Officer of our church for both the York & Hull, and

Leeds Districts, so has a keen interest in farming and village life. Some of you may have already met her

at Malton Cattle Mart.

Church life is difficult to maintain in many places, and the congregations in both church and chapel at

Weaverthorpe are small. However I am proud of the fact that we have managed to refurbish the chapel

and make it a comfortable and modern place, and that the building is home to the Post Office service,

so important to the valley. The coffee morning too seems to be serving a helpful purpose each

Monday. Whether Sunday worship will continue into the future is hard to say, the more local interest

there is the better, otherwise, if the worship ceases, then the mid-week facilities will have to close as

well.

It has been good to be part of the Christian witness in the Wolds Valley, and to enjoy the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds. Thanks to Trevor for his work with the ‘Warbler’.
