The Great Wold Valley Heritage Trail

This project has developed from the findings of the Luttons and Weaverthorpe Parish Plan which was carried out in 2008 and is a response to the communities’ desire for greater information about their environment.

The heritage of the Great Wolds Valley, from Neolithic to Modern times, will be celebrated by the creation of a series of information boards located in villages from Wharram to Foxholes. As well as history and archaeology there will be sections on geology, flora and fauna plus maps, old and new, detailing the area.

In addition to the boards a pamphlet will be produced to promote the Heritage Trail through Tourist Information Centres. To encourage involvement with, and understanding of, the local heritage a teaching package will also be developed for use in the local primary schools.

We will be holding open days in the near future to enable people to come along and comment on the content of the boards and provide their contributions to the history of the area. We would like as many as possible to take part in this project as local knowledge is vital to the success of the Trail.

We have obtained grants from LEADER and the Heritage Lottery Fund to finance the project and hope that it will be completed in 2012.

Minutes of the Parish Plan Action Group – 14 Sept 2009

Minutes of the Parish Plan Action Group held at 7pm on Tuesday, September 14th 2009 at Weaverthorpe Village Hall

Present: Andy Macdonald (Chair), Jenny Clarke, Julie Mason, Caroline Bradshaw, Meg Medley and Marie Darby

1.Welcome and new faces
Andy Macdonald welcomed everyone to the meeting.

2. Apologies: Alan Corbett, Audrey Corbett, Martha Kember, Deborah Richardson, David Armstrong and Enid Armstrong.

3. Minutes of the last two meetings
The minutes of the last meeting had been circulated and were approved.

4. Matters Arising
A round robin has been sent to those people who had previously volunteered for activities by the group.
Andy Macdonald has met with Chris Sims, a Leader consultant, who has links with Leader funded groups connected with waterways. Chris’ commission is not relevant to us.
Andy Macdonald has met with Pauline Reeve from Ryedale Voluntary Action and Wolds Action Group. This is a useful contact re funding and local activity.

5. Progress reports on Projects.
Valley website – the user group continues to meet monthly. Statistics are now available to show activity. The site is currently running a feature for Remembrance Day with recollections of WWII, photos, letters etc.

Dog mess bins – all are now fixed. A bin has been sited on Park Lane, East Lutton. The Wintringham Road in West Lutton is now clear of mess. Complaints have been received regarding the siting of a bin in East Lutton close to a bench seat. Marie is to contact the Parish Council representative at East Lutton re resiting. An expenditure account for the grant money from the Luttons PC has been submitted to the Clerk.  Marie thanked Andy for his help in fixing the bins.

Speed limits/traffic calming – an e-mail has been received from Jane Johnson at RDC regarding consultation for ‘ripple print’ at East Lutton and Helperthorpe. Andy is to investigate the nature of these strips as anything which causes noise nuisance is not ideal.

Wildlife friendly gardens – Martha’s quarterly review is continuing.

Notice Boards – there is no news to report. Both Parish Councils are aware of the ideas involved.

Grass on Footpaths – the action group discussed the recent correspondence on the website regarding clearance work undertaken by a group working party during the summer. Andy has met with Mr. Musto to discuss his concerns. Several learning points arose from this exercise and the discussion within the group:

a)    any houses which may be affected should be notified prior to clearance work being carried out.

b)    ownership of frontage needs to be clarified and property lines agreed. Andy had been given verbal permission to carry out this work by Mr Marr at NYCC Highways.   Subsequently, the Clerk to Luttons Parish Council had been asked if he could help resolve the matter; a detailed response is awaited.

c)    Insurance and liability need to be clarified.  It was proposed that Andy contact Ron Haigh and the RDC Community Planning Officer as this will affect all voluntary activity.

d)    The minutes of the Action Group were available to both Parish Councils, if they wished, through their councillors on the group;  Weaverthorpe received regular updates but liaison with Luttons could be improved to the benefit of all.

e)    Andy had posted the last Action Group minutes on the valley web-site and sought approval for its continuation; this was agreed.

 6.         Leader Bid

Andy has met with Caroline with regard to the nature of any bid. It was suggested that an approach be made to Peter Wilson re heritage and Rose Horspool from the Wolds Heritage Centre at Warter for advice in constructing a bid.  An outline of the budget involved is required with any expression of interest. Copies would be forwarded to the Parish Councils before any bid was entered.

 7. Accounts

There is no change in the Group’s balance and no accounts owing.  Maggie Farey had e-mailed to say that any final balance in the parish plan account could be used for related implementation.

8. Any Other Business

  • A publication -  ‘Parish Planning – a guide to support available from NYCC’ has been received.
  • Copies of the Parish Plan to be forwarded to the NYCC and RDC contacts listed in the above document.
  • It was noted that the Local Development Framework is at the consultation stage but has no relevance to the group at this stage.

9. Date of next meeting

This will take place on Thursday, November 19th at 7pm at Weaverthorpe Village Hall.

 The meeting closed at 8.15pm
