High-speed broadband in the Great Wold Valley

If you would like to hear more of the advantages that high-speed broadband can bring to homes and businesses then come along to Weaverthorpe Village Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 29th March 2012 when the Steering Group for the Community Broadband Project is meeting.   This is not a commercial sales pitch but a bid to bring some of the benefits enjoyed by urban residents to our rural valley; this is a community-led project to obtain government funding allocated to rural development.   So whether your children are into on-line gaming or course work, whether you want to ‘Skype’ with friends and relatives, whether you use Tesco or Asda.com, or download films, music or e-books, whether you need to complete government returns on-line, whether you would like to use your mobile ‘phone at home, whether your business needs to interact with remote servers or upload large files – whatever your communication needs now and in the future, come and find out more, completely without commitment.   We look forward to meeting you then!

High Speed Broadband Project – please complete questionnaire

Whether it be for gaming, distance learning, business, on-line submissions to government agencies, or entertainment, the communities in the Great Wold Valley (Wharram to Foxholes) and Thixendale have the opportunity to access government funding to bring highspeed broadband into the valley – but only if we can demonstrate a demand for it.   If you believe that a reliable, highspeed broadband  (>10Mbps upload and download) could benefit you, your family or your business (regardless of how far you are from a telephone exchange), then please take a few minutes to complete the brief questionnaire on line by clicking here Questionnaire for completion . Once you have downloaded the document, save it on your computer and then e-mail to the website address, which is luttonsandweaverthorpewebsite@hotmail.co.uk

If you prefer a paper copy, one will be enclosed with the next issue of the Warbler.

Once completed and sent in either the electronic or paper questionnaire will be accepted as an ‘expression of interest’, without any commitment, that will allow an assessment of the possible take-up if the project goes ahead.

High-speed broadband in the Great Wold Valley

A well-attended meeting on 16th November heard of the potential to bring high-speed broadband into the valley using the NYCC network and wireless technology. RDC and NYCC staff described how a community project might be established to attract government grant funding for rural broadband, as well as the technology thatcould deliver to subscribers consistentlyhigher speeds in both upload and downloadthan is available through national providers and the BT infrastructure. The meeting also heard from a representative of Newton Rawcliffe where a community project is live and delivering broadband where none was available before.
Those at the meeting expressed their interest inexploring the potential furtherand several individuals cameforward to join a steering group. This group will meet shortly, withthe support of RDC and NYCC staff, to continue to develop the project and seek further expressions of interest from both residents and businesses in the valley.
The project area is either side of a line from Thixendale to Foxholes but a project willonly be viable if there is sufficient interest.
If you are interested, without commitment at this early stage, in benefiting from highspeed broadband then please complete the expression of interest at https://eforms.northyorks.gov.uk/AF/an/default.aspx/RenderForm/F.Name=pJCY5jESfET or complete a form (call 01944 738520).
